In July 2008, I decided to take control of my finances and refinance my car. I called my bank, ready to make some moves. But life, as it often does, threw me a curveball. My banker didn’t get back to me until August 2008 due to a family emergency. Despite the delay, she was able to refinance my car. Phew, relief! Little did I know, August 2008 would be a pivotal month for me in more ways than one.
Fast forward to October 2008, when a friend of mine, also a single mother with multiple children, shared her incredible journey of buying a house. I was so inspired by her story that I felt a flicker of curiosity. Could I do the same? Me, a homeowner? With my finances? Seemed far-fetched, right? Still, one of my guiding principles is to live in the realm of infinite possibilities. Why not see where this could lead?
I asked her for the contact information for the organization she was working with, filled out an application, and sent it in, no expectations, just letting life take its course. As part of the application process, I attended a homebuyer and finance course. There, I received a copy of my credit report and learned strategies for cleaning it up. I followed their advice, writing letters and communicating with the credit bureaus. It wasn’t an overnight fix, but I could see progress.
I did more than just practical tasks, though—I also visualized my future. I would drive past the house I wanted, imagining myself pulling into the driveway after a long day at work, walking to the mailbox, and setting up a Christmas tree in the living room. It felt real in my heart, even if it seemed impossible in my mind.
After refinancing my car, my banker and I mapped out a spending plan, and by February 2009, I had paid off all my debt. Yes, all of it. By some miracle, with a credit score of 587, I was approved for a mortgage. I couldn’t believe it! Not only that, but I was blessed to move into a brand new home in April 2009, a home that had been built in August 2008—the same August that set this whole journey in motion.
Before moving into my new home, I hired a Feng Shui consultant to help with furniture placement, colors, and design. She performed a blessing on my home and, upon seeing my house number—9996—asked if I had chosen it myself. "No," I replied, "Why?" She was astonished. "The number 9 is very lucky," she told me. "I thought you picked it on purpose." I hadn’t, but it felt like the universe was at play.
Today, something happened. I was filling out paperwork and had to look at my birth certificate. I noticed the state file number at the top, and when I glanced at the last four digits, I did a double-take. 9996. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I pulled out another copy issued years before, and there it was again: 9996. The same number as my house.
I thought the manifestation of my home ended with the purchase. And here today, 15 and 1/2 years later, I discover this?
I can't make this up!
Looking back, I realize this journey wasn’t just about buying a home or paying off debt—it was about trusting the process, believing in possibilities, and staying open to the unexpected ways the Universe (we will discuss the Universe at another time) conspires to support us. You never know what magic is just around the corner, waiting for you to take the first step. Funny! I just told someone yesterday that the only thing to do is to take the first step.
I just love the way everything always lays itself out just how it is supposed to be. What did I say in my previous post, The Land of Isnt's? It isn't until it is. I am blown away every time.
